If the GPS Industry was worried that its dash-top navigation devices were being replaced by mobile phones with turn-by-turn software, wait until they get a look at the new Apple iPad.
There is still a lot of conjecture about what the pad can and can't do, but there was a demonstration of Google maps at the unveiling, and it's supposed to run all of the apps that run on the iPhone, which means it should nicely handle GPS voice directions.
And here's the big advantage, it has a 9.7-inch screen. Now all we need is a mounting cradle with a power source, and the panic over it being too distracting can begin.
The iPad with 3G capability will start at $629, about $130 more than a top-of-the-line Garmin GPS. Yes, many of the GPS apps available on the iTunes store charge a $10 monthly subscription fee, but some stand-alone GPS units also have a subscription fee for data like live traffic and gas prices.
Good news for people who already bought a navigation app, Apple said that iPads will run "apps already purchased for your iPhone or iPod," which I take to mean you won't have to pay for two subscriptions.
